CURRICULUM NEWS
Math The children are learning how to create arrays for multiplication and division. They are learning how to label the array to show repeated addition for multiplication and repeated subtraction for division. We are analyzing data on graphs by graph facts using complete sentences correctly edited. We are reviewing one place regrouping in addition and subtraction in preparation for 2 and 3 place regrouping. We are practicing place value to 6 digits. We continue working with fractions, estimation and rounding up to nearest 10. 5 minute addition and multiplication math tests are given on Wednesdays while subtraction and division tests are given Thursdays. Science Last Thursday a group of 6 children learned how to create a podcast. They will be working with the rest of the children in the class to create individual ecosystem podcasts. Language Arts The children are reading from the 3rd grade reading anthology and completing written assignments in their language arts notebooks. Silent reading is completed everyday. Most days children record an entry in their reading logs. Science research writing continues. Children are writing autobiographies. We have explored books with inviting beginnings. Children are revising their research and autobiographies for an inviting beginning. We continue studying and creating alliteration and similes. We are beginning an illustrator study with Mrs. Kaufman and Mrs. Meador’s classes. Mrs. Ross our art teacher is a part of this study. One of the illustrators we will be studying is Ted DeGrazia. We will be making a field trip to the DeGrazia gallery in December where the children will be sketching with Mrs. Ross in the chapel. While some children are sketching others will be touring the gallery. Currently I am reading a book by Gary Paulson called Hatchet. It is realistic fiction about a young boy who survives a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness and leans to survive. STUDY ISLAND – The children are working on Study Island with their 5th grade reading buddies. The questions in Study Island are similar to those on AIMS. I would like to use this site for homework but I don’t know if it will continue to be funded. It is a very good site for your child to practice for AIMs.
